BV-Tele Aremac 4.5/200 or Jupiter-21 4/200

Once upon a time, when we did not yet know about the tricks of Chinese chemists and biologists in Wuhan and hordes of wild creatures had not yet attacked my country, I wrote the text below. But I didn’t publish it. Just out of laziness, probably.

Now I found it on my computer and decided to finish the job. There are two reasons for this -

1. It is very advisable to still bring the matter to the end.

2. There was a reason to compare this Aremak with another product of the Soviet photographic industry. But this will be the second part.

I publish the text of the first part almost without changes. I’ll add that back then the shooting was done on a Canon 5D, which died this year. But the camera is very loyal to this type of old trash, which is why I love it. And I decided that the old man should live and a certain amount of banknotes could be spent on this. Today I was happy to receive my camera from repair!

So...text from 2019.

Quite recently, a semi-finished product called BV-Tele Aremac was purchased at a flea market - a telephoto lens with an aperture of 1/4.5 and a focal length of 200 mm. The lens was in a half-destroyed state - the helicoid was disassembled, the aperture blades were bent. Practically, firewood. But the price was low and the lenses were clean, so I took a chance. The fact that its size was very small, almost like the Soviet Jupiter-37, was captivating. And light. Upon arriving home, another unpleasant circumstance was discovered - it had an M42 thread, but not the one needed. In short, the lens turned out to have a T-mount thread, i.e. m42/0.75. I had to buy a special adapter just for this one. As a result of the repair work, the lens was assembled correctly, the diaphragm was completely thrown out - several blades were simply severely bent, several were lost, several of them had lost the special pins for attaching the diaphragm blades. So the diaphragm had to be removed and thrown away. It's a pity, I counted 8 or 9 petals, it seems. And this is not the full number; it is quite possible that there were 12 or 13 of them.

The photo shows this beast (already with an adapter). And next to it for comparison is the Soviet monster - Jupiter-21. We can say that these are analogues, although I did not find the optical design for this Aremac.

It was decided to take a short walk with these lenses and compare them in action.

First, a few technical points. The focal length of both lenses is 200mm. The aperture ratio is 1/4.5 for the Japanese, 1/4 for Jupiter. There is a difference in favor of Jupiter, but not decisive. Shooting was done at full aperture on both lenses, which was quite acceptable on this outing.

Next, the sizes. The lenses are almost identical in length. But in terms of thickness - Aremak is almost twice as thin - it’s really super convenient. And another advantage of Aremak is that its weight is only 420 grams versus 920 grams of Jupiter. However, during the walk it turned out that it was easier to photograph with the heavy Jupiter than with the light Aremak. Still, the large weight of Jupiter acts as a good stabilizer. So Aremak’s advantage in weight is only significant for carrying; during the shooting process it can even play a negative role.

Jupiter also has a much better situation with MDF - 1.8 meters versus 3.2 meters for Aremak. But this is not very significant. Both lenses are not intended for photographing flowers. For other plots, this difference is not at all critical. Here are some pictures of the appearance for comparison and a few photos from each lens.

My subjective conclusions.

Both lenses, in my opinion, are very high quality and convey the image well, as far as possible for a lens with a focal length of 200mm. Both lenses are sharp and produce good results.

Despite the large weight of Jupiter-21, they are easier to photograph.

However, with some skill, excellent results can be obtained from Aremak. And here its weight advantage of 0.5 kg can already be decisive.

Thank you for your attention.

And now a little additional material.

Here we will look at some external differences between the Jupiter-21M Lenses produced by different factories - Vologda and Krasnogorsk. Here is their appearance -

On November 15, 2017, in this blog I already described the differences between these versions. But then I had the lens of my friend, who gave it to me to play with. Now both of these Jupiters belong to me. (By the way, I can sell both). That’s why now I’ll just add a few shots from the Krasnogorsk Jupiter-21.
Examples can be seen here.

Thank you again for your attention. I wish peace to everyone and victory to the Ukrainian people.
